TRANSHUMANCE, WHAT ABOUT IT?
Transhumance is the practice of seasonally moving livestocks from one place to another with the aim of following best temperature and greener lands.
It is in use since the ancient times among the Italian regions of Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata and Campania. Those areas are infact crossed by tratturi which were buildt by ancient Romans and were basically sheep’s highways.
Those rural routes cover a surface of more than 200km connecting various areas and allowing a safe passage fot the sheeps.
Originally transhumance was horizontal, meaning the flocks were moving from north to south territories. Today the most common is the vertical one, meaning the flocks move from low altitude to a higher one, sometimes over 2000m a.s.l.
There our sheeps can spend the summer enjoing green grass and refreshing breeze.
Mantera is a dialect word from the Italian region of Abruzzo. It indicates the traditional wool cape shepherds used to wear to protect themselves from the very cold winters of Abruzzo’s mountains.
