In 2019 transhumance gained its spot in the UNESCO Heritage List as a valuable practice shared by many cultures and territories.<\/p>\n
It is one of the most ancient, sustainable and efficient ways of breeding animals. Besides taking care of the sheeps it includes managing grazing lands, mountain woods and lagoons.<\/p>\n
Sheperds who practice transhumance have a deep knowledre of the mountains, their resources and respect their natural balance. They also preserve it, in the interest of their work, of community living in the mountains and actually all of us.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”col-img”][vc_column width=”2\/5″][vc_column_text el_class=”testo-flex”]<\/p>\n
Transhumance is the practice of seasonally moving livestocks from one place to another with the aim of following best temperature and greener lands.<\/p>\n
It is in use since the ancient times among the Italian regions of Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata and Campania. Those areas are infact crossed by tratturi which were buildt by ancient Romans and were basically sheep’s highways.<\/p>\n
Those rural routes cover a surface of more than 200km connecting various areas and allowing a safe passage fot the sheeps.<\/p>\n
Originally transhumance was horizontal, meaning the flocks were moving from north to south territories. Today the most common is the vertical one, meaning the flocks move from low altitude to a higher one, sometimes over 2000m a.s.l.<\/p>\n
